Following Joshua's victories at Jericho and Ai, Israel’s enemies joined forces against them. Nearby Gibeonites disguised themselves and asked to make a treaty with Israel. Joshua soon discovered his mistake.
The king of Jerusalem asked neighboring kings to help him fight Gibeon. Joshua came to help them and chased them to Beth Horon, where the Lord sent large hailstones. Joshua asked for the sun and moon to stand still to finish the battle.
When Israel controlled the south of Canaan, the northern kings massed against them. Lowlanders brought horses and chariots for the attack. Joshua attacked suddenly, defeated their enemies and destroyed the horses and chariots. Once the giant Anakim were killed Israel Israel had peace.
After three military campaigns Canaan was under Israel’s control. The land was then divided by lot so the tribes could settle and build new lives. The Levites did not inherit a territory but forty eight cities throughout the land.
When the tribes received their inheritance in Canaan the tribe of Levi did not receive a territory but two cities in the territory of each tribe. Six of them were safe places where people could run to for protection while awaiting a fair trial for accidentally killing someone.
As the tribes returned to the east of Jordan they built an altar by the Jordan River. Some of the children of Israel misjudged their intention and wanted to attack them, but once they learned the truth, left them alone.
Joshua's farewell speech focused on Israel obeying the Lord and driving their enemies out of Canaan. He stressed the Lord’s power in all Israel’s victories and cautioned them not to make alliances with their enemies. Then the covenant was renewed in Shechem, where Joshua set up a witness stone under a mighty oak tree.
When all who knew Joshua had died, Israel forgot the Lord and fell into trouble. The Lord raised up judges to lead people back to Him and restore peace.
The Lord raised up judges to help fight Israel's enemies. The first three judges, Othniel, Ehud and Shamgar received power to defeat the enemies Mesopotamia, Moab the Philistines.
