After wandering in the wilderness for forty years under Moses, Joshua was chosen to lead the children of Israel into Canaan.
On entering the land the Israelites re-dedicated themselves to the Lord. The Lord appeared to Joshua as the captain of the Lord’s army. With the sword of truth in His hand, the Lord showed Joshua His power to conquer Israel’s enemies.
Joshua's farewell speech focused on Israel obeying the Lord and driving their enemies out of Canaan. He stressed the Lord’s power in all Israel’s victories and cautioned them not to make alliances with their enemies. Then the covenant was renewed in Shechem, where Joshua set up a witness stone under a mighty oak tree.
