Saul called for help and successfully defended the people of Jabesh-Gilead, proving his ability to be a leader. So Israel crowned him king.

Saul's Unlawful Sacrifice
Saul was king for two years when he disobeyed the Lord by making a sacrifice. Saul never completely followed the Lord again and would lose the kingdom.

Jonathan's Heroism
Saul's son Jonathan overcame a Philistine garrison. Saul was afraid and brought the Ark to the battlefield so his men would fight. But Saul made a rash oath, and almost killed Jonathan.
